It does not take a genius to know what ballet shoes are for; but it you need to be a smart buyer to know what should be taken into consideration when buying a pair of these shoes.
Know the right type
Basically, shoes for ballet dancers are designed to be lightweight. It is made of soft leather, satin or canvas. Flexibility is an essential aspect of these shoes that is why they should be made of such materials.
The traditional shoes for ballerinas are made of leather soles. These types do not reach to the edges of the shoes. This is the very reason why the split sole has been developed. These kinds are made of soft leather, canvas and satin.
Leather makes these shoes last long. The most comfortable and flexible forms are made of high grain leather. They are of course expensive than the other types but they are sure to last longer than the rest.
Among male ballet dancers, canvas types are the most popular shoes. These shoes are less expensive than the other types of shoes but they easily wear out.
Satin shoes are soft, flexible and lightweight but they wear out quickly. That is why satin shoes are worn by ballet dancers only during their performances. Other than this, they use either the leather or canvas types especially during practices.
Secure your shoes
One grave mistake commonly committed by new ballet dancers is the failure to secure their shoes. In one way or another, they suffer not only physically. Some would even fail to gain the flexibility that they need during practices. So the body and the routines suffer. To avoid such mishaps, it is most important to first secure the shoes before using them.
Shoes for ballet dancers are secured by using elastic. This material is easily deformed so the dancers are not intervened when extending much flexibility. They expand when pressure is instilled on the shoes and they contract when bending is needed during dancing.
There are two ways of securing these shoes using elastic. Both ways are done to ensure firm hold on the shoes during dancing and to eliminate any physical injuries on the dancer while on their routines.
One method of securing shoes is done by using a single band in wrapping across the arch of the ballet dancer s foot. The other one is use of two bands that cross together and form an X shape at the top of the dancer s foot. Some manufacturers produce ballet shoes that are already attached with bands at one end. This makes it a lot convenient for dancers since they are only required to attach the free ends of the band in the shoes.
Another method of securing shoes is the use of ribbons. These ribbons are sewn at the either sides of the shoes. After being crossed over the front of the shoes, the ribbons are tied in a bow to the ankle securing the entire feet from losing the shoes while ballet dancing.
